Coconut Oil – a girls Best Friend
Ah…the wonders of Coconut Oil
An Ode To Coconuts
We all know that coconut water is incredibly good for you. Although I do know some people that are surprised to learn this information, the rest of us know, anyway. Coconut water is good for everything inside your body… all your systems. But I had never heard of coconut oil until my friend Carrie (Letters To My Friends) began to extoll it’s virtues. Then, when I found out I was going on this sailing trip, I emailed my friend Lisa, who is a yachty (she works on private yachts and travels round the world on them) to inquire on any boating tips. She said: Coconut Oil.
So, I happen to find a bottle of Coconut oil in my cabinet from years ago (thanks andrea!) and poured some into a small spray bottle. So far I have used the oil in the following ways whilst on board “Living the Dream”
- Skin Moisturizer – Carrie uses it every day at home on her face and body, and I actually started doing this as well. I had been using cocoa butter on my face, but the coconut oil, just a few drops, absorbs beautifully into your skin very quickly, and has so far proven noncomedogenic (sp?). It is also great for your body, so keeping it in a spray bottle is very convenient
- Sunscreen – I know, makes no sense, but we did look it up on the internet to confirm, and I have my own skin as an example. While I am still getting some sun, i’m not burning at all. Just browning, which is what it says on the internet, too. Shocking but true (at least for me).
- Hair – Ok, if you’ve never seen me you dont know about my hair. My hair is a “thing”. It’s got a zip code, a personality, and I do believe that Lady Gaga’s Song “Hair” is my personal anthem, or at least my hair thinks so. My hair is verythick, and very curly. My hair does not consider salt water a friend, and wind is the enemy – and combined, they are more terroristic than the Uni-bomber. Lisa the yachty friend, upon receiving my request for tips, suggested Coconut oil for my hair. Yip, spray bottle of coconut oil and spritzing my hair, and it’s helping to keep the dreaded dread-locks away.
- Cooking – We have a small burner on the boat, and I love me some eggs in the morning. The little frying pan long lost it’s non-stick quality and you can imagine trying to clean a pan caked with stuck on egg on a boat with only a tiny pump water sink smaller than a water fountain. Of course, I never had to actually deal with that issue because I first sprayed the pan with coconut oil, and am making the best omelets you’ve ever seen. Unlike olive oil, coconut oil doesnt lose it’s health benefits in the cooking process, so my breakfast is an even healthier way to start my day 🙂
So, dear reader, Coconut Oil. It’s your friend.
