Bequia, The Grenadines
Bequia, pronounced Beck-Way, Grenadines is a charming little island town that is part of St Vincent and the Grenadines. It’s got about 7,000 people on the island, but it doesnt feel like it. There is only one small town, and i loved it. It felt very familiar and comfortable to me. It was a bustling little town, and not many tourists except on the main drag. The cruise ships go into St Vincent, about 20 miles away, then come over in droves on ferry’s and tenders.
I’d be lying if i didnt admit that my favorite time was when they all left. Then you could get back to the business of being in the town.
When i was first dropped off, i had to take the boats garbage to the can. Of course, i was dropped off at the opposite side of the bay, so i had to walk around. no worries, every local i passed noticed the bag and pointed the way. I do wish Bequia had more than one garbage can for sailors use – i dont like walked 30 minutes carrying garbage…get’s in the way of my fun and picture taking!
Finally a post office! Off go the postcards from Trinidad, Grenada and the Grenadines, from Bequia.
After mailing my postcards and letter to G-Pa, i walked the main drag. There are stalls and tiny shops set up along the promenade. I happen to stop in one, “Jewel of the Sea” and wound up having a very soulful conversation with “Kemmy”. If you stop in Bequia, please tell him i said hi. I gave him the pocket copy of “The Four Agreements” that i had with me as we had gotten into a conversation about intent, purpose, and directing your life. It was nice to have such a chat with someone, and i was glad i’d brought the little book. Someone had given it to me as a gift, and it seemed fitting to give it to Kemmy. I had used the book like a Bible during my trip, and i thought it time to share.

My laptop broke very early in the trip, and all i had was a very old iPhone. Fortunately, there were 2 places in Bequia with sufficient internet that the iPhone worked, and i could make US phone calls. It was great to be able to hear the voices of my friends. The “WhaleBoner” with it’s whale spine seats has great internet, but they dont take credit cards. “Frangipani” also has really great internet and they do accept credit cards.

I spent 3 or 4 nights in Bequia. There was a little blues festival, but it was sort of a bust. Nice to see people out and about though. I’d definitely recommend this place to stop and “be” for a while. It was lovely, and i do hope to get back one day. It was a comfortable little town, and the people reminded me of home…and after all, i love belize, so it’s always nice to be reminded of her when i’m away.
