The Mysteries of the Maya…

The Altun Ha Maya Ruin Tour and Jungle Spa Visit

Altun Ha Maya Ruin in Belize with romantictravelbelize.comOn this adventure you head out the backside of the island toward the mainland. Soon you will be winding through the Northern River where you are likely to see Orchids, cactus and a rich variety of birds and indigenous animals. At Bomba Village, you will then board a private bus that takes you through several quaint villages as you make your way to the maya Ruins of Altun Ha.

There, our guide will give you a tour of the ruins and you’ll have some time to explore. Once you have worked up a healthy appetite, we will head to the Maruba Jungle Spa for an exotic lunch including fish and wild game. After lunch you can take a refreshing dip in their pool or indulge in incredible treatments such as herbal facials and mud baths (for those that wish to be pampered). Then enjoy the swift boat ride back through the river and home to San Pedro.

Flourishing during the Classic Period of Maya civilization, the true ancient name of this site is unknown. “Altun Ha” is a maya translation of the nearby village named “Rockstone Pond.” The extent to which the site has been cleared and restored makes it easy to imagine its past glory and wealth as a major ceremonial center. The archaeological site covers about one square mile of area, with at least 500 visible structures. Evidence dates the earliest settlement here to 200 BC, with varied construction phases ending about 900 AD.

This Adventure Includes: Beer, sodas, rum punch and snacks

The Lamanai Jungle River Adventure

Lamanai Maya Ruin Belize tours with romantictravelbelize.comStart the day with a scrumptious breakfast of fresh fruit, muffins and fresh squeezed orange juice as you wind your way through the Northern River and enjoy the early morning sights and sounds. At Bomba Village, a private bus will take you through jungle, villages and sugar cane fields to Tower Hill, where your tour of the New River begins. As you make your way towards Lamanai, you will encounter animals indigenous to the area such as river otters, turtles, crocodiles and monkeys.

Once at Lamanai you are served a tasty picnic lunch of local fare. Then you hike through dense jungle and explore the ancient maya temples that majestically perch on the water’s edge. At the end of the day, as you make your way back to San Pedro, you will realize that your experience to Lamanai will linger with you as a truly Beyond Ordinary experience.

Lamanai is the Spanish historic name for Lama’ an/ayin, which means “submerged crocodile.” The Royal Ontario Museum directed a archaeological research project at Lamanai between 1974 and 1986 during which over 940 structures were mapped. A long, unbroken sequence of Maya occupation at Lamanai occured through Preclassic and Classic times, beginning by roughly 1500 BC.

Includes: Breakfast, lunch, beer, sodas, rum punch and snacks. This adventure departs at 7:00 am and returns at approximately 5:30 pm

Caracol Belize Tours – Mainland Stays Only

Caracol Maya Ruin in Belize with romantictravelbelize.comSituated high on the Vaca Plateau deep in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, Caracol is the most extensive Mayan site in Belize and was only re-discovered as recently as 1936. The site of Caracol covers over 80 square miles with 30,000 structures, and at its peak supported a population in excess of 150,000. Situated at 1600 feet above sea level (one of the highest located sites of the southern uplands region) with no natural water body close by, it remains a mystery why such a huge population centre like Caracol evolved where it is. However, the close proximity to both extremely hard stone and copal, two commodities highly prized by the Mayas may help explain this enigma.

At the heart of the site lies the massive pyramid of Caana (Sky Palace) which is now almost fully restored and reaches a height of over 135 feet. From the top you can enjoy breath taking panoramic views over the forest clad mountains.

The drive to the site in the early morning occasionally allows guests to take a glimpse of tapirs, jaguars or ocelots, as they break their forest cover to cross the road. The sprawling site contains huge Ceiba, Mahogany and Sapodilla trees and is superb for birding (the rare Keel-billed Motmot is one of the many residents of the site). Wildlife such as Howler and Spider monkeys, the Oscellated Turkey, Coatimundi, Gibnut and Grey Fox are often sighted while quietly wandering along the site’s causeways or along trails connecting the plaza groups.

Scuba Diving

Belize Scuba Diving certification with travel agent romantictravelbelize.comLearn to Scuba Dive with one of our experienced professional Dive Masters and Instructors.

Spanning Belize’s coastline for 185 miles is the Belize Barrier Reef with dive sites inside and outside of the reef providing countless dive locations year round.

With underwater visibility routinely extending hundreds of feet, and water temperatures akin to that of bath water, divers of all ages and abilities take pleasure in knowing that a dive in Belize’s waters is physically comfortable and teeming with activity.

At the Blue Hole near Lighthouse reef divers descend vertically along the walls of a submerged cave to weave between stalactites and stalagmites at 120-140 ft.

The atolls located beyond the barrier reef and heavier visitor traffic, offer combinations of patch reefs and the sheer walls of drop offs teeming with huge schools of fish.

Just outside the reef and before the “drop off”, look for Spur and Grove formations – narrow canyons of corals which are great for spotting grouper and the occasional emerald moray eel.

The Great Blue Hole Belize diving possibility with travel agent romantictravelbelize.comDrift dive along a ridge in lazy pursuit of a spotted drum fish, half over coral gardens and immense barrel sponges and then with a flick of the fin find yourself suspended in the bottomless blue of the drop off.

Inside the reef, patch reefs are covered with hundreds of brightly colored fish and coral species.

For something a little different, try snorkeling or diving near a mangrove island “the nursery of the sea” where you are sure to find tiny barracuda, snapper and other fish whose parents you might have seen in deeper water.

These are only a few of the choices and when you meet your dive guides, they will have their own “secret spot” to share with you!

Once back at Jaguar Paw you can change into dry cloths and enjoy lunch. Next it is on to the famous Belize Zoo, not your average zoo and well worth the trip. Finally it’s back to the swift boat for the ride back to San Pedro.

Note: this trip can also be done with either a Horseback riding at Banana Bank Lodge or the Jungle Zip Line adventure, instead of the Belize Zoo option.

Jungle Zip Line and Cave Tubing Adventure

Belize Jungle Zip LineThis wonderful day begins as we make our way towards the mainland and up the Old Belize River. Actun Tunichil Muknal Belize Cave Tours – Mainland Stays Only

Belize ATM Cave TourFor the fit and adventurous this is hands down the most talked about cave in Belize. Discovered in 1989 and open to the general public since 1998, the ATM cave is a full five kilometers deep. After a 45 minute hike in the cool tropical rainforest and across three streams you enter its hourglass-shaped mouth for a 10 meters swim in water at most 5 meters deep, to land on a rock shelf. The next 600+ meters is a journey of well over a half hour filled with many sharp & slippery edges, water depth alternates from just covering your toes to portions where only the tallest won’t need to swim. Along the way you pass many calcite formations, a few which have undergone minor sculpting (purpose unknown), by the Maya. After this distance, you ascend 2 or 3 meters to a shelf above the river. From this point forward is shallow ground, where you walk barefoot (with socks only).

As you go forward you encounter increasing amounts of pottery of all sizes, their condition from near intact to completely shattered. Cataloged within the cave are over 1400 artifacts – pottery, tools, and ceremonial items dating from 1 to 1000 AD – including over 200 vessels. While over half of all the items appear in plain sight in small pools, they are also tucked away between stalagmites, on small, high shelves or other unusual places. The artwork found in Actun Uayazba Kab in unmatched when compared to any other site.

A not-so-common artifact are human remains. So far, remains from fourteen individuals have been found; 7 adults & 7 children, all under the age of 5. These are not the ceremonial burials found in the other two caves in the area, but are sacrificial victims. They were all likely sacrificed in the hopes of appeasing the gods and bringing rain. Young victims, particularly females, were important for rituals to be “zuhui” – pure & uncontaminated in the eyes of the gods. The Crystal Maiden was a young woman of about 20 years old whose complete remains lie at the back of the cave. It is believed that she was clubbed and left for dead, and with the passing of time she has been cemented to the floor in a layer of brown calcite. (To reach her final resting place, you must climb aluminum ladders mounted on a sheer rock face!) Don’t choose this tour if you are not an extreme adventure lover, it is not for the faint hearted!

Rio Frio Cave – Mainland Stays Only

Belize Cave TubingThe massive mouth of the Rio Frio cave is its signature. Belize potentially has the largest cave system in Central America, with the dome of Rio Frio being the largest in the country as well.

Large boulders, some covered with moss, allow for climbing high up along the side near the wall of the cave, and stepping-stone stairs have also been set to make the hike easier. When inside the cave, the other large entrance (or exit) can also be seen, as the entire cave is less than half-mile long. A river runs through the cave, and in the dry season, it is possible to hike through to the other side. This less traveled path reveals another trail outside the cave, and some smaller caves are accessible from here. Flashlights are always a good idea, but are not necessary, as the cave has natural light filtering through most of the day, since both entrances are not far from each other.

A visit to the enormous Rio Frio Cave is highly recommended, when in the Mountain Pine Ridge area. This is probably one of Belize’s least strenuous cave tours, so if you have a specific interest in caves, and enjoy adventure, consider this your first of many, all with varying degrees of difficulty.

The Belize Zoo & Tropical Education Center

Belize ZooThe Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center was started in 1983, as a last ditch effort to provide a home for a collection of wild animals which had been used in making documentary films about tropical forests.

Shortly after the backyard “zoo” began, it was quickly realized that its Belizean visitors were unfamiliar with the different species of wildlife which shared their country. This very aspect fomented the commitment to develop the little zoo into a dynamic wildlife education center.

Today, The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center is settled upon 29 acres of tropical savanna and exhibits over 125 animals all native to Belize. The zoo keeps animals which were orphaned, born at the zoo, rehabilitated animals, or sent to The Belize Zoo as gifts from other zoological institutions.

A visit to the zoo is the best way to get an introduction to the animals of Belize, and to understand why it is important to protect the habitats that sustain them. We hope this website will be the next best thing to visiting us in person.

The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center believes that by bringing the people of Belize closer to the animals which are their natural heritage, they will feel proud of these special resources, and want to protect them for future generations.
