Roatan To Belize City and a Quick Mammogram

Roatan to Belize City and a Quick Mammogram while you wait

I woke at 4 am although I didn’t really need to be up until closer to 5am, but you know how it is when you have an early flight – hard to trust the alarm clock. It was pouring rain as I showered and finished packing. I toasted the left over bagel from my delish breakfast the day before, grabbed a Diet Coke from the fridge, and had breakfast.

Emsly, owner of Hyde Tours was waiting for me as arranged at 545 am to take me to the airport. We were there in plenty of time.

There were 8 other passengers for the short Tropic Air flight that departed at 7 am. I had the good fortune to have Ana, Guest Services Manager from Las Verandas on the flight with me, and as we chatted away another passenger joined our conversation. LaurieAnn is the fishing guru at El Pescador, the world famous fishing lodge on Northern Ambergris Caye. We shared a lot of ideas as she too found a welcome place for her specialty in Roatan as well. Fishing Wedding anyone?

The uneventful flight arrived in Belize City without too much ado. It’s quite nice having only 8 other people to go through Customs and Immigration and it made for swift processing. I said goodbye to my travel companions, and got in a taxi.

My friend Libby Storey, founder and owner of Caribbean Spices, and I had arranged to meet in Belize City and then drive to Cayo for a few days. She was scheduled to arrive at the Municipal Airport at 1030 am, so I had some time to kill. So, I asked the taxi driver to take me to Belize Medical Associates as I had been trying to get over to the City to get a mammogram and an ultrasound.

I arrived at approximately 910 am. A receptionist took name, address and date of birth and I was asked to take a seat. She called me to the counter to pay for the procedures. Total cost: $170 bzd ($85 usd). Seriously, $85 bucks for both a mammogram and an ultrasound. Reason number 35,345 I love Belize.

At around 935 am, I was brought into the mammogram room and immediately had my boobs squished. This was of course, after she looked at my breasts and realized the doohickey had to be changed to the smaller doohickey. Five minutes later, I was in the ultrasound room and told to wait for the doctor. About 3 minutes later, the doctor came in and performed the ultrasound. She detected nothing of concern.

I was asked to sit in the lobby again, and after about 5minutes, they handed me my films and I was free to go. Total time: 1 hour 5 minutes for a walk-in at the hospital. Amazing. Medical Care in Belize
