Sailing from Trinidad to Grenada
Early in January, I was facebook chatting with an old friend who was going to be sailing the atlantic alone, in a 27′ sailboat. I was asked if i would like to come along once the boat reached Port Of Spain, Trinidad and then we’d sail up the Lesser Antilles.
Um….YES, YES i want to sail the caribbean sea. YES, i most certainly do.
So, on January 10, i boarded a flight to Miami and connected through to POS, Trinidad. I arrived after midnight, so i didnt see much, but i can tell you this – it’s HUGE. This was not going to be some quaint little island village. It’s an enormous city.
There isnt much i can say about Trinidad, we were in a marina that wasnt my favorite place, but was ok. I was really just itching to get going. We werent staying there long, so i cant speak to anything wedding related, but i did get a real estate magazine since so many of you love that stuff 🙂
The TT (trinidad and tobego dollar) is about 6 to 1 usd. This is a bit offputting when you look at pricing in the millions, then realize you divide by 6. Not too bad, then. Seems to me you can get a very cute house for about $200,000 usd, but again, i’m not even sure about areas, so my advice – skip it and come to Grenada, which was our next port of call, and from whence i write this blog.
On the way, we saw the Venzuelan Oil towers in the sea. Made me sad as i thought about the recent Supreme Court decision overruling the validity of the tens of thousands of signatures against offshore drilling in Belize. Will be awful to see these HUGE ugly towers in our waters. I hope we dont, i really do.
It was a 20 hour sail, into the head winds. It wasnt the smoothest sailing in the world, considering we were in the “Bathtub” (as i affectionately call the itty bitty boat). I am not at all ashamed to say i “chummed” twice. And for those of you who dont know what that means, it means i fed the fish with the contents of my stomach.
We finally arrived Prickly Bay, Grenada at 4 am. Cant wait to see more
