September Celebrations Event Calendar

The National Institute of Culture and History has sent out a complete calendar of Events for September Celebrations.  For those that dont know, September is one big party in Belize.  There are several important holidays to learn about and enjoy.

On September 10, we celebrate St Georges Caye Day.  This day commemorates the great battle of St Georges Caye wherein the Belizean woodcrafters defeated the Mexican army backed by Spain.  From Wikipedia: The battle took place between an invading force from Mexico, attempting to assert Spanish claims to present-day Belize, and a small force of resident woodcutters called Baymen, who fought for their livelihood assisted by black slaves. After the final two and a half-hour battle, ravaged by sickness, the Spaniards withdrew and the British declared themselves winners.

On September 21, we celebrate our independence from British Rule.  While Belize is still a British Commonwealth and the Queen is still on our currency, in 1981 our own parlamentary government was established, and the beloved first Prime Minister of Belize, George Price, just recently passed away in 2011.

September Celebrations is a FABULOUS time to visit belize and to truly experience the culture of this incredible country.  Click the link below for the full nationwide calendar.  TONS to do!
