Grenada Part 2

“Living the Dream” and i have been anchored in Grenada now for 5 nights so far.

I had a chance to walk around St George, the capital of Grenada yesterday.  It is an absolutely lovely little city of about 30,000 people, but feels significantly larger due to the enormous cruise ships that come in daily and the hundreds of boats/ships/yachts of all sizes that cruise the Caribbean.

Grenada is very mountainous, much to my surprise and has a road that runs around the perimeter.  The “buses” (minivans) are constantly zipping around and you dont have to wait more than about 30 seconds for the next one to come whizzing by saying “bus bus bus!”.

The salt air has been wreaking havoc on my hair, so i found a “shop” and sauntered in.  I paid $40 EC (about $17 usd) for a wash and a trim.  The proprietor of the shop, Shirly, is who did my hair, and after she was all done, she asked me if i wanted her to “do it up nice”.  I said sure.  10 minutes later, out I sashayed with the entire front of my head twisted into make shift cornrows that ran to the side of my head.  Not only was all the pullling and twisting a very effective way to keep my hair out of my face, it also provided an added bonus of a mini-facelift.  She then took all the tails left from the twisting, and pin curled them in a pile on top of my head, with all the hair on the back of my head hanging down.  I thought this was great, however, i do have some dignity and i am not, in fact, black and some do’s only look good on some ethnicities…so as soon as i was out of the shop, i removed the pin-curls, but left the twists.  I kinda dig ’em, and they really really do keep my hair out of my face …for the first time in decades i didnt smother myself in my sleep.

All in all, i have to say, that while expensive (about the same cost of goods as belize), it’s an absolutely lovely country.   I’m not sure what their deal is regarding weddings, because i cant seem to find much information.  Very much like Belize, this is the one thing they seem to be missing in their marketing plan and there was nothing at the Tourism Board.  The very nice lady there did tell me that i could go to their website, but they had no literature.

Also, for those interested, i was able to get more pages for my passport.  It was $82 usd, and they were very nice about the whole thing, and rather quick over all.  I did however, get in trouble (no surprise to those who know me) for taking a picture of the Embassy.  I had no idea this was a problem, a photo from the outside, but when the very large security man started taking my picture in return, i knew the jig was up.  So, as a little tip – yes, you can get more than one set of additional pages in your passport as this was my second.   Away i go some more!
