My Maya Ruin Obsession

I am originally from Philadelphia.  I have an obsession with Rocky, the Flyers, WaWa and Tasty Kake.

I am now from Belize.  I have an obsession with coral reefs, rice and beans, and Maya Ruins.  The Reef is an obsession because,  well, the second largest in the world, and its ours, all ours.  This tiny country has one of the biggest most important things in the whole wide world.  I live on an island on the coast of Belize, so when i walk my dog on the beach, i’m looking at that amazing reef.  I’ve been here for over five years and have looked at that reef just about every day.

My Chicken Rice and Beans obsession, is well, less of an obsession and more of an obligation.  Once you live here long enough, you somehow become infused with the stuff, and realize its a part of living here.  non negotiable.

The Maya Ruin Obsession, however, is bigger and badder than any other (well, except for Rocky).  I cannot help but marvel at Maya Ruins.  “They were smart little suckers”,  I always say.  The more you study them, the more you become immersed in their very real  culture, the more you realize, ‘they were smart little suckers’.  The Egyptians, the Maya, the Aztec, the Indian, all built temples thousands and thousands of years ago.  we dont know how, to this day.  But they are still here.  I get to live in a place where i can run amouck in those ruins any ole time i want.   For those of us that have chosen to make Belize our home, this realization is often …  astonishing.  At least it is for me.

So, here i find myself, astonishingly, in the middle of el Mundo Maya.  Not only am I here, but I’m here at an amazing time.  The Maya believe that come December 2012, the world will enter another cycle.  NO one here really thinks the world is coming to an end… thats just for hollywood (thank you john cusack).  It’s a time of rebirth, renewal, and new beginnings.

In the coming weeks, and months you will see more and more from me about the December 2012 Event.  I will try to post facts and opinions, and also, a few little bits on how fantastic Belize is for your 2012 wedding.

No where else can you have the Ruins and the Reef.  Only in Belize.

oh, and i bet i can get you a plate of chicken rice and beans too 🙂
