A Walk In The Park
A Walk In The Park on Ambergris Caye, Belize
The weather has been, as they say, “shite”. It’s been raining for nearly 6 months, which is unheard of for Belize. Every day it does clear up a bit for periods of time. I try to get the dog out for a walk during those clearer times. I started out with Max and it was sunny and nice. We were headed for the beach, and Max was one happy pup.
Shortly after reaching the beach, a storm cloud rolled in. It was just to the south, and i thought we might be spared, but we did get some rain. I had brought “The Big Camera”, a Canon EOS 20D, that I have no idea how to use, and my point and shoot. As the rain came down, i was most concerned about the The Big Camera, so I decided to duck under a tree for cover. I took these shots from there.
I was near The Lions Den Park in Mosquito Coast, so I dashed for the thatch covered round table and sat on it. This spot, under the thatch, was just perfect. I could sit on the table with my back against the umbrella post and be stable with the heavy camera. I loved the obvious metaphor of this being New Years Eve day, the last day of 2013, and you could see the sun on coming, and the clouds going.
After sitting a while and playing with the camera, I realized this was a great spot to do a “2014” thing in the sand for my facebook cover photo. I got a stick and wrote in the packed, hard sand as best I could and then sat back down. Just as I did, two tourists came walking toward me. Well, actually directly toward the freshly written “2014” in the sand. I called out to them, I was only a few feet away, but the one lady ignored me completely, and her other friend came directly to me. I tried to stop the ignoring lady, but she plowed right through. I explained to the intruding lady that I had just written in the sand, and she said “OH! I’ll take advantage of your 2014!”.
Now, of course, she meant take advantage of the 2014 in the sand, but in my reflective state, it struck me as more of an omen than anything else. I became instantly surly as I contemplated a stranger “taking advantage of my 2014”. I stayed a while longer, having forgotten the annoying interlopers, and was rewarded by lots of sun. I played with The Big Camera and my Sony point and shoot. I cant tell much of a difference, but then again, I’m not a photographer.
I walked through The Lions Park, and i saw this on the ground. There are a lot of cool things in this park, but i’d never sat in it before – always just walking by. I imagine it’s the same for those that walk through Central Park in NYC every day on their way to work or wherever.
I decided to walk home on the road as I’m really trying to walk my own personal “road less traveled”. The sun was getting ready to start callin’ it a day as Max and I came through and around to the Lagoon. I’d seen a pair of croc eyes just up against the wall the day before on my bike ride home from town, and I know that dusk is just about feeding time for Crocs, so I told Max to hurry up, and we went home.
