Grenada Part 3 – Moliniere Under water sculptures

Grenada Part 3

On Day 5 in Grenada, we pulled anchor mid-morning, and sailed to Molinaire.  It was abouto 3 miles from us, and took several hours as there wasnt much wind – but who’s in a hurry anyway?

Moliniere Bay is where the French anchored to recapture Grenada from the British in 1779.  This place has some history, i’ll tell ya.  Between the French, the Brits, and the Americans during thier struggles here in the ’80’s, no wonder Grenada is so friendly, there’s always someone up in their grill!

Anyway, the worlds first underwater sculpture park is here.  It’s about 7 feet down and is a circle of life sized human figures holding hands, slowly being reclaimed by the sea from coral.  There is also a life sized man at a desk, and a man on a bike, dont ask my why.  In 2010, another artist added 14 more pieces to the scultures already existing 65 pieces.  Pretty nifty.

Then we were off to Carriacou.  (pronounced – carry a coo).  Earlier this week, i had met a rasta from Carriacou.  The refer to the main island of Grenada as “the mainland” just like we belizean islanders refer to Mainland Belize.  I am very excited to go to Carriacou for 2 reasons, 1) they are supposed to have the best beaches in the Caribbean, and 2) I’m curious if it will be like Caye Caulker.  It’s supposed to be quite small, but then again, now that i’ve seen these other islands, San Pedro is a tiny island comparatively speaking.

ps – never was able to see the sculpture park.  there were only 2 moorings (bouyes) to tie to, and both were taken, and you werent allowed to anchor.  We had a 10 hour sail (3 knots tacking against the wind) to get to Carriacou, so we just went first thing in the morning instead.  I sorta imagine the pictures you see in books are good enough 🙂
