Tale of 3 Cities – Part 3 San Pedro, Belize
I was in the US for a total of 3 weeks. That’s the longest i’ve ever been away from Belize. Its the longest i’ve ever been away from any home…never taken a 3 week vacation, and i’d at least have popped home for a weekend if it were a business trip. This trip was both business and personal, and it was three weeks straight. It was exhausting.
The very second I stepped off the plane in Belize City i remembered why i’d moved here in the first place. As i came down the stairs from the plane, i saw people i knew…the people that worked at the airport, at immigration, at Tropic Air. When I’m aiting at Tropic Air for the flight home, that’s when i start to decompress and know that soon…soon i will be home.
Normally, that would be enough to make it a good return to Belize. But as i waited for my taxi to take me to go collect Luna the Wonder Puppy and Thelma the Deaf Blind Cat, my friend Doug, from Cowboys Bar and Grill up at Grand Caribe happened by. He picked me up, helped me collect said menagerie, and drove me home. Very nice way to be greeted. I was starting to feel even better…starting to shift from USA mode to Island mode. It’s a process, shifting of gears and recalibrating and stuff.
I got in the house, called a friend of mine and had a lovely “welcome back to the island” decompression time. She lives nearby, so Luna and I walked her home. It’s so lovely at night, so… Belize. It’s very interesting, the transitioning from “Up There” to “Down Here”, and it’s not always easy. I felt very much as though i’d been giving a very soft, welcoming landing back to Belize from my crazy tours “up there”. I’m so glad to be home, to be back “down here”.
